If ever an album deserved to be set in the microgrooves of 150 gram vinyl, it's Mean Scene by St. Louis band Rum Drum Ramblers. Released earlier this year in the plebeian Compact Disc format, the record, meticulously tracked on vintage analog gear, spans the pre- and postwar (hell, sometimes smack in the middle of the battle) blues styles the trio owns. In the Ramblers fleet hands and close harmonies, country blues and jump jazz rattle and roar, as if emanating from a time machine piloted by punk-rock kids with nothing to lose and a world of swing to gain. So consider the band's vinyl release party a genuine maiden voyage. The genres may be well-charted, but, when played with so much life, they're always new again.
