People who lived during Victorian times were an interesting bunch, obsessed with death, and clothing almost as much. Imagine a summer like the one we've had and you're wearing either full suits and hats or layers upon layers of dresses and petticoats and slips and what-have-you -- no wonder thoughts often turned to dying back then! How could you think of anything else? To highlight this long-ago way of life and show us some of its peculiarities, along with its niceties, the Jersey County Victorian Festival offers a living-history experience all weekend, beginning at 7 a.m. daily (Saturday through Monday, September 3 through 5). Through events such as the Victorian Civil War Style Show, which is narrated by Mrs. Lincoln (that's right, Abe's wife) at 11 a.m. each day, and the Civil War-era embalming demonstrations (going on from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily), we sure will get an eyeful of the period's touchstones. Throw in the stagecoach holdups, the Civil War reenactments, and the antique and craft marketplace, and there's no doubt that this festival provides quite an old-fashioned, one-of-a-kind experience! Admission to the fest, which is held at the Hazel Dell farm on Route 67 (one mile north of Jerseyville, Illinois), costs $10 for those thirteen-years-old and older; parking is free.
