You may not think you have anything in common with the packs of Mexican gray wolves that roam the Southwest on both sides of the border, but you'd be wrong to do so. All of those wolves were either born here in St. Louis at the Endangered Wolf Center, or their parents were born here. In fact, 45 percent of the Mexican wolves born in the United States hail from St. Louis -- that's quite an achievement. But there's still a lot more work to be done to set the endangered Mexican gray and the red wolf on the path to a sustainable future. You can help your one-time neighbors by attending Wolf Fest 2011 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday (September 24 and 25) at the Endangered Wolf Center (6750 Tyson Valley Road, Eureka; 636-938-5900 or www.endangeredwolfcenter.org). This open house/party allows you to see and photograph the wolves and other wild canids that currently call the center home, talk with the keepers about the work they do and enjoy demonstrations by local canine demonstration groups and conservation organizations. Admission is $20 per car, which goes to help keep the Center in business -- if you really want to be a good neighbor, you might consider becoming a member. Those wolves can’t save themselves, you know.
