Arty Shaw

Now, as the crisp nights prove perfectly snuggle-worthy, and the green leaves of summer change to red and gold, the young romantic's mind turns to ... art. Not just any art, mind you, but a huge collection of locally crafted pieces, displayed by the artists themselves and set against the backdrop of one of St. Louis' most beautiful streets. Yes, we're talking about the Historic Shaw Art Fair (Flora Place at Tower Grove Avenue). Now in its nineteenth year, this much-loved festival returns with dozens of artisans, performers and food vendors. Admire the stately abodes of Flora Place as you peruse sculptures, paintings and wearable art (jewelry, scarves, dresses and more) at prices even a non-dowager can afford. Live entertainment includes sets by Tom Wood and Steve Sulewski. Local restaurants and the Shaw Neighborhood Improvement Association serve up everything from pepperoni pizza to plantain empanadas to Korean BBQ sliders. The Shaw Art Fair lasts from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday (October 1 and 2). Tickets are $5 (free for children younger than 14 attending with their parents). For more information, call 314-771-3101 or visit www.shawartfair.org.
