Isabel Allende's debut novel The House of The Spirits wove her own family history and that of her homeland, Chile, into a sweeping, multi-generational story that exposed the hardships wrought by being a woman in a post-colonial, patriarchal society. There's also a strong undercurrent of myth and magical realism, and a pervasive hope that cycles of violence and hatred will be broken. It's a corker, to be sure. Playwright Caridad Svich adapted the novel into English in the form of a musical-drama, which will be assayed by the University of Missouri-St. Louis Department of Theatre, Dance and Media Studies. The House of the Spirits is performed at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 3 p.m. Sunday (October 14 through 16), and again at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday (October 19 through 22) at the Touhill Performing Arts Center at the University of Missouri-St. Louis (1 University Drive at Natural Bridge Road; 314-516-4949 or www.touhill.org). Tickets are $5 to $10, except on Wednesday, October 19, when all seats are just $3.
