If the words Larry Brown Jr. don't ring any bells — or if you've confused him with the other thousand St. Louisans with the same name — do not be alarmed. While lurking in the shadows of the local jazz scene, the guitarist has spent his time honing his craft rather than flooding your inboxes and Facebook pages in the name of self-promotion. The decade Brown spent in the woodshed culminates on his debut There Can Only Be One, an album of nocturnal hard bop and candlelit balladry. Brown has made up for his common name by becoming an uncommonly great musician, and his debut proves both his proficiency at the instrument and his mastery of a mood.
