Lola STL Music Festival

8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, October 6 through 8. Lola, 500 North 14th Street

The most overrated word in the musical lexicon is "scene," and yet a genuine scene — coherent, diverse and impactful — is just what the Washington Avenue district club Lola has forged. Ground zero in St. Louis for funk, soul, jazz, hip-hop and DJs, the venue has embarked on the first Lola STL Music Festival, three nights and a day of national and local groove-minded artists. Along with headliners Dam-Funk with Master Blaster and Diamond D, the event's most impressive booking coup is R&B multi-instrumentalist Van Hunt, who performs Thursday, bringing the radical fusion of hard rock, decadent funk and sleek balladry found on What Were You Hoping For?, his first album since a contentious split from Blue Note.
