More About

Few writers capture a sense of place as well as Daniel Woodrell. With a journalist's eye for detail and a poet's sense of language, the native Missourian weaves narratives that never hit a false note. In Winter's Bone, Woodrell evoked a landscape at once devastated and devastating. Yet for all the hardships his characters endure -- and there are many -- Woodrell avoids the lesser writer's tendency to patronize (or worse, pity) the people who populate his books. Fans of Winter's Bone surely let out a collective sigh of relief when the film adaptation turned out to every bit as amazing as Woodrell's novel. Tonight, join Subterranean Books at the Center of Creative Arts (524 Trinity Avenue, University City), as the beloved indie bookshop hosts a screening of Winter's Bone and a visit with Woodrell himself. The author will participate in a Q&A session and sign his newest book, The Outlaw Album. Individual tickets are $25 and include a copy of the book; couple's tickets are $30 and include one copy per couple. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., followed by the Q&A at 6 p.m. and the signing at 7 p.m. Winter's Bonebegins at 7:30 p.m. For more information, call 314-862-6100; visit Subterranean Books, COCA or www.cocastl.org to purchase tickets. This evening with Daniel Woodrell is co-sponsored by Cinema St. Louis.
