At the start of 1991 Matthew Sweet was a Midwestern boy with an Athens, Georgia, pedigree and a couple of stalled albums to his name. By the year's end, his album Girlfriend would come to signal a new era of power pop — one built on Badfinger and Big Star, certainly, but Sweet's sound also carried the weight of post-punk amid the jangle and pop. Twenty years later, Sweet is playing the record in its entirety and the songs, from the divine "Evangeline" to the Byrdsy guitar patterns of "I've Been Waiting," still stand up alongside tracks from his just-released Modern Art.
