You'd expect great things from a collaboration between Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim and William Shakespeare, and West Side Story, the 1957 Bernstein/Sondheim musical based on the Bard's Romeo and Juliet, was indeed a success. This despite what producers feared was a too-complex score, dark lyrical themes and too much tragedy for a musical. The lesson, as always: trust the instincts of the creative people, not the businessmen. The musical eventually transferred over to the silver screen, with a few changes to story and score, in 1961, which makes the film an evergreen 50 years old this year. In celebration of that nice round number, Turner Classic Movies presents a special one-night only screening of the film nationwide. The West Side Story 50th Anniversary Event features a pre-show discussion with TCM's Robert Osborne, actor George Chakiris ("Bernardo," the Sharks gang leader) and Marni Nixon, who dubbed Natalie Woods' singing voice. You can revisit the classic film at 7 p.m. at the Regal St. Louis Mills 18 (5555 St. Louis Mills Boulevard, Hazelwood; 314-227-5503 or www.fathomevents.com). Tickets are $12.50.
