Many have trod these same waters as tUnE-yArDs' Merrill Garbus, trading in a band for a looping pedal and marrying pop with noise, but none have Garbus' schizophrenic charisma. Throughout her breakout album, w h o k i l l, she is a soul diva, a shouting punk, an early-'80s beat girl and a reggae hypewoman, often shifting personas within one song (see: "Bizness"). Her performances are augmented by a bassist and, rumor has it, a saxophone section, but Garbus is still the one doing the heavy lifting with her live vocal and drum loops. Even without the electronics, she could sing a cappella and we'd probably think, "I bet this would sound totally sweet in headphones."
