The musical juggernaut known as Mamma Mia! can not be stopped, and at this late date, it can't be contained, either. Unsubstantiated rumor claims every day, seven performances of Mamma Mia! occur somewhere in the world, from far-flung Pakistan to right here in St. Louis. Is it the international appeal of the music of ABBA that makes the show so beloved, or is the story? Because honestly, the plot point "young woman on the brink of her wedding wants her father to walk her down the aisle," generates nothing more than a shrug. But then comes news that the bride doesn't know who her father is, because her mother "dated" three men in rapid succession, and any one of them could be the proud papa, and suddenly you want to know a lot more about mom, don't you? Mamma Mia! brings the likely paternal candidates together on a Greek island, adds mom's fun-loving friend who runs the local taverna, drops the revelation that mom used to sing in a girl group and then mixes everything together in the pop confections of ABBA's back catalog. Mamma Mia! plays at the Fox Theatre (527 North Grand Avenue; 314-531-1111 or www.fabulousfox.com) Tuesday through Sunday (November 22 through 27), with no performance on Thanksgiving. Tickets are $25 to $75.
