Supergroups are a dinosaur rock novelty best left in the '70s or '80s — bands such as Asia and Bad English proved that the whole is often less than the sum of its parts. So it's with a wink and a nod that Mister Heavenly wears the "supergroup" tag, though its members hail from three respected, restlessly experimental rock bands. Nick Thorburn (Islands, ex-Unicorns), Ryan Kattner (a.k.a. Honus Honus from Man Man) and drummer Joe Plummer (Modest Mouse) combine for a skewed take on classic pop-inspired compositions that the band cheekily calls "doom wop." Kattner's mad-dog vocals and Thorburn's smooth croon give a nice balance to these tunes, which never feel like the tossed-off stepbrothers of the players' other bands.

Better Than: Listening to the bloated egos and overblown guitar solos from the supergroups of yore. Damn Yankees, anyone?
