More About

Young Amahl is a bit of a tale-teller. This bad habit concerns his mother almost as much as she worries for his future -- Amahl has a deformed leg, and she fears he'll end up a begger. Then one fine night a huge star appears in the sky, and soon enough come three kings bearing gifts for a child born under this star. The trio stops for the evening with the family, and Amahl's generous nature proves that his mother's concerns for his future are unfounded. Gian Carlo Menotti's opera Amahl and the Night Visitors is a seasonal favorite, with its Nativity theme and message of kindness begetting more kindness. Union Avenue Opera presents this kid-friendly production (it's about 50 minutes long) at 8 p.m. Friday, 5 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday (December 9 through 11) at the Union Avenue Christian Church (733 North Union Avenue; 314-361-2881 or www.unionavenueopera.org). Tickets are $15 to $47.
