As the fourth-most-recognizable member of New Pornographers, Kathryn Calder can't exactly build a separate career on Canadian indie-pop cache, and thankfully she hasn't tried. Her first solo album was a homemade meditation on the illness of her mother, while this year's surprisingly underexposed Bright and Vivid more fully orchestrates her elegant if somewhat abstract songwriting. Calder's sound is closer to post-Lilith Fair AAA radio pop than anything her bandmates would venture. That feathery, harmony-rich vision — all acoustic rhythms, electronic splashes, found sounds and reverb, tons of reverb — should endear her to fans of Dido and St. Vincent at once.

What To Expect: Currently touring as part of a straight-ahead quartet, Calder is by necessity distilling her songs to a catchy rock essence.
