"Back to the Basement," the title track from the Queers' newest offering, shows figurehead Joe Queer whining about a wimpy modern punk scene, asking, "What happened to Black Flag?" and recalling a time when "every band had balls." Truthfully, the Queers was never the most testosterone-driven group, with its Ramones-fetish melodies and surfy guitar tones; the band's wussiness was once its trademark, making hardcore homophobes uncomfortable with songs about wieners and butts. Back to the Basement sounds like a return to roots, but Joe Queer never really grew out of his immature soil; he and his crew are silly, spunky and politically incorrect as ever.
