Gregg Allman

8 p.m. Tuesday, January 3. The Pageant, 6161 Delmar Boulevard.

Progenitor of the mass psychosis known as the jam-band scene, Gregg Allman isn't taking his legacy for granted. With the Allman Brothers, his archetypal growl and underrated organ chops defined '70s blues rock, but it was the guitar orgies the hordes wanted and still want. Allman's 2011 album, Low Country Blues, casts a blood-chilling glance back on the blues and builds a wall of sound — filled with brass, piano and percussion — that's decidedly of-this-moment, especially on a heroic version of Bobby Bland's "Blind Man" and a smooth stroll through B.B. King's "Please Accept My Love." Accept it and get reacquainted with a true American music master.

More About

What to Expect: At the age of 64, Allman is still a stout vocalist, barely roughed up by years shouting over Marshall stacks and about-to-be ex-spouses.
