Americana musicians have a history of bathing in hyperbole. The beautiful women are always on their side, the whiskey never runs out, and the characters are either beautifully broken or peerlessly noble. Repeating the myth often enough may make it true or it may just leave you battered, single and hung-over. Murder by Death pedals all of these myths and then some, adding Southern gothic imagery and doomsday parables. An American storyteller in the truest sense, the band embodies Nathaniel Hawthorne as much as it does Johnny Cash. And in the spirit of those writers, their tales, richly spun and thunderously delivered, supersede the myths.
