More About

Great art does far more than imitate life -- it leapfrogs over mere imitation and provides unique ideas, fresh views and unexpected insights. Using his incredible eye for detail, self-taught artist Danny Speck creates paintings and drawings that bring new life to familiar images. Speck's art depicts people he encounters in everyday life (waitresses, policemen) as well as pop-culture figures (KISS, Michael Jackson) and iconic brands. These are no mere caricatures; Speck inverts worlds, plays with angles and perspectives, and utilizes a Technicolor palette. The visionary artist does much of his work at the Turner Center for the Arts (3109 Sutton Boulevard, Maplewood), a nonprofit studio for adults with disabilities. Visit the Turner Center this evening for the opening reception of Speck's solo show. Between 5 and 9 p.m. Friday, January 20, meet the artist, view his work, and enjoy hors d'ouevres and custom-roasted Arthouse Coffee. Admission to the reception is free, and all of Speck's works are available for purchase. Sales of the pieces benefit both Speck and the Turner Center. For more information, call executive director Nate Larson at 314-781-4440 or visit www.turnercenterforthearts.org. The show runs through Friday, February 3, and the gallery is open Monday through Friday.
