British conceptual artist John Stezaker cuts and pastes to startling effect. His collages are often made up of just two elements, a classic movie portrait and a landscape picture postcard, brought together in a single act. The work is arresting and surreal, made all the more interesting for its ingenious simplicity. Similarly, the large-scale, multimedia installations of Hungary’s Balázs Kicsiny also unite disparate elements. Devised in St. Louis, Kicsiny’s latest installation, Killing Time, is a "frozen performance" involving three service industries: the restaurant, the army and the circus. Both artists have exhibitions opening today at Washington University’s Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum (One Brookings Drive; 314-935-4523 or www.kemperartmuseum.wustl.edu). Stezaker’s work will be shown in the Ebsworth Gallery, while Kicsiny’s installation will open with a reception tonight from 7 to 9 p.m in the Garen Gallery, and the works will remain on display through Monday, April 23 and Monday, April 16, respectively. The reception is free and open to the public.
Mondays, Wednesdays-Sundays. Starts: Jan. 28. Continues through April 23, 2012
