Pianist Joey Calderazzo entered the general consciousness in the late '80s as a sideman for Michael Brecker. Saxophonist Branford Marsalis, like his outspoken brother Wynton, was genetically engineered to become a monster of jazz. Together, they have played fusion funk in Buckshot LeFonque and searing hard bop in Branford's quartet, but the Branford Marsalis & Joey Calderazzo Duo is something else entirely. The collaboration references John Coltrane, Claude Debussy, Thelonious Monk and Erik Satie in equal measure. The short-lived third stream movement attempted this jazz/classical hybrid in the '60s, but Marsalis and Calderazzo's execution shows fewer seams and much less effort.
