Talkdemonic

9 p.m. Monday, February 13. The Gramophone, 4243 Manchester Avenue.

Talkdemonic melds live percussion, electric violin, automated sounds and drum machines to create a vivid soundtrack of polyrhythmic sections. Portland natives Kevin O'Connor and Lisa Molinaro bring a human element that works as a nice juxtaposition against machine-made backtracks and pre-recorded chunks. Molinaro carries a strong leading melody on her viola through most pieces, and O'Connor uses his drum set to supply an acoustic rip to mostly electronic music. At its best, Talkdemonic brings together the askew moments of free-jazz and the rigid complexity of classical music.

Talkdemonic released Ruins, its fifth album of inventive instrumental music.
