Schwervon!'s Nan Turner and Matt Roth legendarily met at a New York City "antifolk" night, but there's very little that's folkish about the music they make together. With four albums under its belt, this bassless duo has perfected a joyous, no-nonsense sound that recalls such 1990s indie-rock bands as the Spinanes and Helium, with enough sweetness and vulnerability to have successfully opened for the Vaselines and Belle & Sebastian. Roth breaks up his power-chord-heavy guitar playing with fragile, spindly breaks while Turner provides crisp and rock-solid drumming. Both of them sing/shout songs about the small things in life: Listening to Jad Fair, cooking dinner together, going to Coney Island and hearing the city unfold around them.
