Every week thousands upon thousands of the public-radio faithful gather around the hi-fi for This American Life, the Ira Glass-hosted program that addresses big themes (gossip, immigration, the Ten Commandments) and breaks them down into journalistic and storytelling “acts.” At its best, the show discovers neglected corners of our country while finding some universality among these varied stories. This week Glass and company leave the WBEZ studios in Chicago for This American Life Live!, a live-action version of the show, with guests spots by comedian Tig Notaro, writer David Rakoff, musicians OK Go and more. The event takes place in New York but will be broadcast in theaters around the country, including the Regal St. Louis Mills Stadium 18 (5555 St. Louis Mills Boulevard, Hazelwood; 314-227-5500). This is one of those rare theater-going experiences where cell phone is encouraged -- smart phone users are asked to download the This American Life & OK Go Handbells app for an audience participation segment. Tickets are $20 (the app is free), and the show begins at 7 p.m. Until Glass gets all Garrison Keillor on us and turns his program into some urbane hoedown (a chilling thought), this may be the best way to experience the show outside of your Toyota Tercel. Visit www.thisamericanlife.org for more details on the show and a link to download the app.
