Filmed in secret on the streets of Sophiatown in 1959, Lionel Rogosin’s revolutionary neo-realist film Come Back, Africa exposed the horror and injustice of apartheid to the world at large. To avoid raising the suspicions of South African authorities, Rogosin used nonprofessional actors and had his film unit pretend as if it was at work on a lighthearted musical. Fittingly shot in black and white, reality seeps though the dramatization in every frame, including shocking examples of “urban removal," where blacks were uprooted from their homes to make way for white commercial and residential concerns. Come Back, Africa will be shown in a new 35mm restoration this Friday through Monday at 7:30 p.m. in Webster University's Moore Auditorium (470 East Lockwood Avenue). Tickets are $6, and discounts are available for students and seniors.
