Mary Ann Rodriguez-Veatch, "The Lost Nino"

And 41 states are attempting to limit the voting rights of young people and minorities. In this week's special feature, "Crossing the Line," Village Voice Media offers a selection of viewpoints and artwork to honor the passing of the American dream.

Days of Rage: Phoenix-based Village Voice Media columnist Stephen Lemons suggest that civil disobedience might provide the answer to the immigration debate.

NO NON CITIZEN should be voting here in the Political Elections.....whether LATINO, Chinese, Greek or otherwise ! I was born here in the US 50 years ago, and I have to show ID each time I vote.......why should not everyone. Because some tried to fraudulently vote, now everyone.....even legitimate citizens are suspect. Get over it.....Show your ID and move on ! !

I also believe that my numerous African American friends would take, as I do, GREAT exception at your attempts to parallel your history in America to theirs! I fought long and hard for equal treatment for African Americans and again...reference the fact that they have had to COMPLY with American laws.

Oh yes...and you are not the new blacks...African Americans were by and large brought here as slaves...they did not come here of their own free will.

You evidently missed my points...I am a retired teacher and federal social worker...I worked with the statistics and I know the facts...I will repeat my points with appropriate personal examples. Illegal is illegal...not a Racial Thang...and yes...I carry my State ID, my Passport, my original SS card and a Drivers License...I also carry my proof of car insurance along withmy proof of ownership...I do not believe these are impositions...I believe these are laws. I have an Olive complexion and a nose which often has characterized me as French, Italian, Jewish, Meditteranean...I guess I have been racially profiled because of my features...However...see above...I do not mind proving my citizenship...Why would you, if your intent is honourable and you are legal... I speak and write English fairly well...loving to write. If I chose to move to another country...I would learn everything I could about the government and requirements to live there...and I would EXPECT to learn the lanquage and comply with educational requirements. This only seems logical and I would not dare to think that I could impose my will upon another country and their people. I did not reference hispanic and latinos in the workplace...I do not know what you were reading...but it wasn't in my comments...I referenced my 2 friends/coleagues not being able to remain in the US because of immigration and work requirements...however...since you brought it up...my opinion is thus...if you work here...even for minimum wage...you NEED to be a citizen...I do not care about your opinions regarding a cheaper labour force and americans unwilling to work specific positions...It is my belief...that...if offered, promoted and advertised to AMERICANS...AMERICANS will reply and work...if not...then perhaps, those jobs need increases in salaries and benefits and AMERICANS will work them...AGAIN...my point...AMERICAN JOBS for AMERICANS...it is simply that SIMPLE...what is the problem with becoming AMERICAN?...Learning the language and insuring compliance with AMERICAN LAWS...

"Ethic cleansing is eminent." Eminent? Are you kidding? Can the RFT no longer hire writers and editors that have the 6th grade (if you're slow) grasp that the words 'eminent' and 'imminent' are, umm, different? If you can't generate cover art that is accurate to anyone with an education beyond grade school, how can you be trusted to dig for facts?

Hey, now! Some of us liberals don't want them breaking laws here either and side with the law on the issue. After all, if we encourage no respect for the laws of the United States, then why the hell do we even bother having a United States to begin with?

If you come here legally, then I welcome you with open arms. If you sneak into this country without proper papers, then you have to go back where you came from. It's the law! PERIOD. These bleeding heart democrats want to throw open the floodgates just so they can get more unregistered and illegal voters to keep them in office--that's why the Dems are also against showing ID cards when you come in to vote.

Under federal law, being "undocumented" is illegal. It's been that way for decades now. And the United States is probably one of the easier nations to get citizenship in; just look at Mexico for an example of much harsher citizenship requirements.

Freedom isn't under attack. The right of a nation to keep up its own laws on what allows someone to become a citizen is. Along with the right of a nation to not accept people who are not even obeying the legal process to become citizens.

Historically, if Hispanic and Latino folks would only have made an effort to learn our language...Americans would feel better about their status. AND...ILLEGAL is illegal...we cannot invade Canada, Mexico, France, England...etc...without becomming LEGAL...this is not a RACE issue...THIS is a LEGAL issue...We limit...as well we should lots of folks...I have had 2 friends forced to leave the US...1 from Denmark and 1 from Bali...both English speaking, writing and talented folks...no Green Cards for them...have never understood our LAX laws regarding immigration...My daughter is half Scots...and she cannot readily receive benefits from Scotland....
