Domesticity in a Glass House

Susan Taylor Glasgow's recent work explored the ideas behind the "bluebird of happiness," pairing images of the winged creatures with those of tethered housewives and examining the feminine "nesting instinct." This line of thought led naturally to the artist's next venture, The Communal Nest. The massive installation piece intricately intertwines "twigs" made of glass with the real things to craft a massive nest with a chair propped in the middle. The piece invites viewers to take a seat in its protective hold (not literally, of course), while the fragile, transparent components threaten to shatter at the slightest touch. The Communal Nest opens with a free reception at Craft Alliance in Grand Center (501 North Grand Boulevard; 314-534-7528) from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 20, and remains on display through August 26.
