More About

Caius Martius, also known as Coriolanus, is a successful General who returns to Rome and slides easily into the senate -- thanks to some well-heeled allies holding the door open for him. Unfortunately, he loathes the masses he’s sworn to serve. Rather than entertain his tyranny, Rome exiles him, and things begin to go very, very wrong. The St. Louis Shakespeare Company’s 28th season opens with Coriolanus, the Bard’s tragedy of returning soldiers, economic disparity and public strife. Why is this play making a comeback? Maybe because Coriolanus isn’t the hero Rome needs, just the one it deserves. The play (in modern dress, with hooded sweatshirts and such) runs July 20 through 29 (showtimes vary) at the Grandel Theatre (3610 Grandel Square; 314-534-1834); tickets are $15 to $25 and are available at brownpapertickets.com.
