More About

If you know anyone with a home garden or a CSA share, chances are you’ve been offered a tomato or ten this summer. The juicy red fruit is everywhere this time of year, and that’s a good thing -- few foods are so versatile or delicious. So it's only natural that Iron Barley (5510 Virginia Avenue; 314-351-4500), that venerable, beloved eatery tucked away on the city’s south side, makes a yearly tribute to the beloved nightshade with its Tomato Fest. Now in its eighth year, the fest finds new and exciting uses for those plump red suckers, and chef Tom Coghill always thinks big: Last year, he and his staff made the world’s largest BLT, with 600 pounds of bacon and 550 pounds of tomatoes. All this gluttony is for a good cause -- Tomato Fest is in benefit of the Lift for Life Academy. The event kicks off at 2 p.m., and local folk acts the High Dives and Boss Hall will perform throughout the day.
