Mary Todd Lincoln was born into privilege, but her life wasn't short on misery. The wife of America's sixteenth president outlived her husband and three of her four children only to have the sole surviving son commit her to Bellevue Insane Asylum in Batavia, Illinois, at the age of 57. The Missouri History Museum (5700 Lindell Boulevard) provides a glimpse into Lincoln's last night in Bellevue before being released to live with her sister in the play Look Away. Based on the book Mary Todd Lincoln: Her Life and Letters by Justin G. Turner and Linda Levitt Turner, Look Away paints a Mary Todd Lincoln who believes she still lives in the White House, lamenting her many misfortunes with her once-seamstress, Elizabeth Keekly.
