In Asma Kazmi's new exhibition the idea of gender distinctions is placed under the microscope. Working with a group of New Delhi hijras — the Indian term for eunuchs, hermaphrodites and cross-dressing men who exist on the fringes of Indian society — the female Kazmi learned to imitate the hijras' hyper-stylized feminine dance moves. In a video that's part of the exhibit, the three performers who would nominally be classified as male create the flawless illusion of coquettish women during a dance routine, while Kazmi fumbles her way to a rough approximation of their grace. Asma Kazmi: Playing Gender opens with a free public reception at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, October 11, at Gallery 210 on the University of Missouri-St. Louis campus (1 University Drive at Natural Bridge Road; 314-516-5976 or gallery210.umsl.edu). Playing Genderremains on display through Saturday, December 1, and the gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday.
Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: Oct. 11. Continues through Dec. 1, 2012
