More About

Roller derby is an ass-kicking contact sport that's earned every ounce of its mainstream trendiness — not a compliment we'd bestow upon, say, broomball. Roller derby's rise in popularity yielded the film Whip It, directed by Drew Barrymore and starring Ellen Page, and now it plays background to author Joelle Charbonneau's murder-mystery novel Skating on the Edge: A Mystery. The book is the second in Charbonneau's Rebecca Robbins mystery series, and follows Robbins, owner of Toe Stop roller-skating rink, as she attempts to solve the murder of roller-derby teammate Sherlene-n-Mean, who is electrocuted and killed in a dunk tank after offering to sub for Robbins. Was Sherlene the intended target, or was it Rebecca? Get clues at 7 p.m. tonight, when Charbonneau stops by Left Bank Books downtown location (321 North Tenth Street; 314-436-3049 or www.left-bank.com) for a free book reading and signing, with special guests the Arch Rival Roller Girls.
