More About

New York photographer Leland Bobbé specializes in portraits, believing that his work illuminates something about his subject and himself. In his Internet-galvanizing series Half-Drag, Bobbé has captured something essential about human nature. These lush color images of New York drag queens bifurcated with their female persona on in all their made-up glory on one side and their underlying male faces revealed on the other fascinate because they portray so clearly the dual nature of our public and private selves. There's something intimate in these faces that show so starkly the hidden side of a human being, right next to the public mask — or is it the other way around? Leland Bobbé's Half Drag opens with a free public reception from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, October 20, at phd gallery (2300 Cherokee Street; 314-664-6644 or www.phdstl.com). Half Drag remains up through Saturday, November 24, and the gallery is open Thursday through Sunday.
Thursdays-Sundays. Starts: Oct. 20. Continues through Nov. 24, 2012
