Alton Nightlife

Now in its 96th year, the Alton Halloween Parade is the undead granddaddy of Halloween parades. Think about it. Alton is famous as the "most haunted small town in America"; the parade's been a regular occurrence for just shy of a century. You don't think some of the deceased people who enjoyed the celebration in the 1920s would return to the material plane to enjoy it all over again? It's the perfect cover for a ghost — people of all ages dress in costumes, everybody's trying to scare everyone else, and candy (which is thrown by those on the parade's numerous floats and hot rods) is flying everywhere. That caramel came from beyond the grave, friend. The 2012 edition of the parade starts at 7:30 p.m. at the corner of Washington Avenue and Broadway in Alton, Illinois. There's no charge for spectators (or spectral spectators), and more information is available by calling 618-462-7257.
