Just as so many in contemporary Japan have a full-on fascination for all things American as refracted through the loopy prism of our pop culture, the English during Victoria's reign harbored a similar crush on Japanese ways. So much so that the UK's preeminent opera savants of the time, W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, crafted their famous work The Mikado as a satire of their own nation's ruling class' foibles -- disguised as a send-up of the Japanese. In so doing, Gilbert and Sullivan's comic opera became a massive hit; The Mikado remains a staple of opera companies around the world to this day. Winter Opera of St. Louis stages this classic at 8 p.m. Friday, November 9, at the Skip Viragh Center for the Arts on the campus of Chaminade College Preparatory School (425 South Lindbergh Boulevard, Creve Coeur).
