The Grandpa Gang Rides Again

Older gentlemen of retirement age in Alton evidently stay very active. How much so? Try more than two and a half million Christmas lights' worth of active, bub. This year the old Illinois river town's legendary Grandpa Gang is at it again with their Christmas Wonderland in Rock Spring Park (2116 College Avenue, Alton, Illinois; 1-800-258-6645 or www.visitalton.com). The gang of Alton-area seniors organizes, designs and hangs the elaborate Noel spectacle of cascading lights, tunnels and unique displays in the park, and all you have to do is wind slowly through it with your headlights off. Additionally, carriage rides (usually more romantic than SUV, sedan or subcompact rides) will be offered on Friday, Saturday and Sunday on a first-come/first-served basis, at the cost of $30 for the first person and $5 for each additional passenger. Non-horsedrawn conveyances entering the park have a suggested entrance fee of $7 for cars and small vans or $1 per person for vehicles holding more than ten people. Christmas Wonderland is open every night from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. (Saturday and Sunday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.) and will stay up through Tuesday, December 27.
