More About

Perennial holiday favorite The Nutcracker is a work in process as far at the Moscow Ballet is concerned. For 20 years now the company has developed and refined its production of the Petipa/Tchaikovsky ballet, particularly in the areas of special effects and costume design. The story remains the same: Mischievous Uncle Drosselmeyer still has his overflowing bag of gifts to present to little Clara and Fritz, which includes the nutcracker Fritz breaks in fit of envy. And that, children, is when all Mouse-King-chaos breaks loose. But the Moscow Ballet's Great Russian Nutcracker includes innovations such as a Christmas tree that grows to an incredible seven stories high, a genuine Russian Troika sleigh, fanciful horses, a rose-shooting cannon, as well as more than two hundred hand-sewn costumes. The Great Russian Nutcracker returns to the Peabody Opera House (Fourteenth and Market streets; 314-241-1888 or www.peabodyoperahouse.org) for one show only, at 7 p.m. this evening. Tickets are $32 to $86.
