The worst part of any holiday party is the chit-chat. Trying to figure out the safe topics to talk about with people you maybe don't know that well is always fraught with peril; what if this person doesn't like wrestling? Or worse, what if they love wrestling? Ahh, now you have to speand all night listening to this guy drone on and on about John Cena's best matches. Fear not. With the Subterranean Books Holiday Open House, the party comes with a built-in topic -- books. When you're with book people, there's always another author, or novel or poetry collection to talk about. Even better, since you'll be in a book store, you can most likely walk to the appropriate section of the store and hand them the book in question -- if you're feeling holiday generous, maybe even buy it for them on the spot. That's how you make a new friend. Subby staff will have food and drink on hand, and there will be random giveaways of books and gift certificates throughout the evening. The open house lasts from 5 to 7 p.m. this evening, and Subterranean is located in the heart of the Delmar Loop at 6275 Delmar Boulevard in University City.
