To meet the very tight deadline for the release date set for Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, composers Klaus Badelt and Hans Zimmer had a scant three weeks to conceive, score and record the music for the film. So as any good captain would, Badelt and Zimmer called all hands on deck. At least eight composers, nine orchestrators and three conductors were enlisted to write additional cues and cobble together the soundtrack in record time. The film, adapted from the Disneyland animatronic water ride, went on to be a massive success, grossing over $654 million worldwide and launching three sequels to date. This weekend, Richard Kaufman and the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra perform the music of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl as the film is projected behind them at Powell Hall (718 North Grand Boulevard; 314-534-1700 or www.slso.org). Performances take place at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday (December 28 through 30). Tickets cost $30 to $80.
