New Jersey-born Edward Boccia came to St. Louis in 1951 to teach painting at Washington University and never left. He also never ceased developing his own art, which incorporated the technical skill of the classical school and the emotional punch of abstract art. Finding inspiration in the crabbed figures of Max Beckmann and the rich tradition of biblical triptychs, Boccia's paintings reveal an artist concerned with his own personal search for meaning in a world that increasingly valued the superficial. Edward Boccia: Figurative Expressionist, a solo show of Boccia's art, opens with a free reception at 6 p.m. Friday, January 18, at the Saint Louis University Museum of Art (3663 Lindell Boulevard; 314-977-3399 or sluma.slu.edu). The gallery is open Wednesday through Sunday, and the show remains up through Sunday, March 3.
