Right about now is when we're really starting to miss fresh, locally grown produce. Sure, our gardens have been dormant for a while, but for the last two months, we still could hold onto our dreams of fall and winter holiday foods (these comforting dishes aren't the same as fresh tomatoes, true, but they're still quite delish). Now, when we're staring down at our bloated bellies and looking ahead to the Super Bowl's endless chicken-wing dip offerings, fresh zucchini, peppers, herbs, eggplant and, of course, tomatoes seem so far away and out of reach. To bring them a bit closer in your sights and to get organized so you can get your garden growing at the first possible moment, be sure to attend the second annual Winter Garden Social and Seed Swap, held from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Crown Room at Schlafly Bottleworks (7260 Southwest Avenue, Maplewood; 314-241-2337 or www.schlafly.com). During this information session, Schlafly garden gurus Nolan Kowalski and Jack Petrovic will share their vast knowledge about how to rotate your crops, garden sustainably, build a nutrient-rich compost pile and more. Plus, there's beer for purchase and a seed swap -- what more do you need to alleviate those mid-winter blues? Admission to the social is free, and so are those sprouts of growing motivation.
