E-readers such as Kindle and Nook might have been all the rage over the past few years, but the perfectly plain paperback and humble hardcover offer big benefits that their digital doppelgangers will never be able to match. When you enter a person's home their bookshelf speaks volumes, not only from the titles on the shelf, but in how they're arranged and displayed. There are no digital-rights-management headaches when dealing with paper books and no batteries required to turn the page. And when you're finished with a traditional book, you can lend it to a pal or offer it up for resale — no questions asked. The Jewish Community Center (2 Millstone Campus Drive, Creve Coeur; www.jccstl.com) offers five days of shelf-help with the annual JCC Used Book Sale, from Sunday through Thursday (February 3 through 7). Books range in price from 50 cents to three dollars. Sunday is the preview day, with a $10 admission charge; admission is free Monday through Thursday, and the sale opens at 10 a.m. daily.
