More About

Katie Dellamaggiore's documentary Brooklyn Castle focuses a lens on the most award-winning national junior high-school chess team in the United States: Intermediate School 318, an inner-city public school in Brooklyn, New York. Five young teammates living below the poverty line are profiled not only for their technical mastery of chess, but their dedication, focus and success despite challenges and losses at home -- and even at school, as budget cuts threaten extracurricular programs. Since its premiere at last year's South by Southwest Film Festival, Brooklyn Castle has won a handful of awards and garnered much critical praise for its honest, inspiring, undefeated subjects. Webster University Film Series screens Brooklyn Castle at 7:30 p.m. Friday through Sunday (March 8 and 10) at Webster University's Moore Auditorium (470 East Lockwood Avenue; 314-968-7487 or www.webster.edu/filmseries). Tickets are $5 to $6.
