No one, but no one could weave a tale of double-crosses, adultery and spousal homicide better than James M. Cain, author of the landmark hard-boiled crime novels The Postman Always Rings Twice, Mildred Pierce and Double Indemnity. All three were adapted to film in the 1940s and are among the most celebrated examples of classic film noir. Now, the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis raises Cain on stage with David Pichette and R. Hamilton Wright's adaptation of Double Indemnity, in which an insurance agent on a routine house call becomes ensnared in a scheme to murder his femme fatale's husband and score a big payday for the black widow. Double Indemnity is performed Tuesday through Sunday (March 13 through April 7) on the Browning Mainstage at the Loretto-Hilton Center on the Webster University campus (130 Edgar Road; 314-968-4925 or www.repstl.org). Tickets are $16 to $79.
Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: March 13. Continues through April 7, 2013
