Spring Colors in the Air

We all thought the big holiday season ended on January 1. Wrong-o. Holi is a major holiday observed by Hindus primarily in India and Nepal as well as around the world wherever sizeable populations of Hindus live -- such as our own multi-culturally diverse metro. The festival of Holi celebrates the arrival of spring and all the color and renewed life the season brings with it. Celebrants throw colored powder at each other as a literally enacted metaphor for the rejuvenating palette of hues emerging from nature. The Saint Louis Festival of Colors (Holi) is held today from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Maryland Heights Sportport (12525 Sportport Road, Maryland Heights; 314-439-5500 or www.stlsportport.com). This inclusive Hindu festival welcomes people of all ages and faiths, and the colors used are non-edible, non-toxic and for external use only (best to wear clothes you're not overly concerned about, as the hues will stain them). Tickets, which include your supply of colors you'll be chucking about, are $5 to $10. For more information, visit www.djsamhifi.com/stldesiparty.
