If you only know The Wiz from the movie starring Diana Ross and Michael Jackson, you haven't really experienced The Wiz. Charlie Smalls and William F. Brown's Tony-winning musical is a far cry from Joel Schumacher's screen adaptation. Dorothy starts in Kansas, ends up in Oz and joins forces with a cowardly lion, a tin man without a heart and a no-brains-having scarecrow in order to get back home. Along they way, the quartet faces adversity, learns they're all stronger, smarter and braver than they thought, and that you can do anything if you believe in yourself. Also, some amazing songs are sung, not least among them being "Brand New Day (Everybody Rejoice)" and "Ease on Down the Road." The Black Rep presents The Wiz at the Grandel Theatre (3610 Grandel Square; 314-534-3810 or www.theblackrep.org).
