The cut-out silhouette, a shadow's artistic-yet-stationary cousin, evokes everything that ordinary shades don't. Sure, a silhouette can't follow us around, mimicking our every move, but it possesses clarity, definition, personality, thanks to the artists who create them. Practicing an almost-forgotten art, these talents bring silhouettes to life, capturing a place and a time in a way that still leaves something to the imagination. Clay Rice is a silhouette artist who is following in his grandfather's carefully cut path and keeping the art form alive by engaging new fans through his award-winning children's books. Original illustrations from his book The Lonely Shadow, which incorporate colorful backgrounds with detailed silhouettes, are on view in Gallery I at the Foundry Art Centre (520 North Main Center, St. Charles; 636-255-0270 or www.foundryartcentre.org), from Friday, June 28, through Friday, September 27 -- plenty of time to get lost in Rice's shadows. A reception is held from 6 to 8 p.m. on opening night, and the gallery is open Tuesday through Sunday.
Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: June 28. Continues through Sept. 27, 2013
