Summer in St. Louis brings many opportunities to hear music al fresco. The Gateway Festival Orchestra has been doing it for 50 years at this point, which makes it the granddaddy of the tradition. Tonight at 7:30 p.m. the GFO presents An Evening at the Opera at the Brookings Quadrangle at Washington University (Forsyth and Skinker boulevards; www.gatewayfestivalorchestra.org). This two-hour concert features popular selections from great operas such as Barber of Seville (with soloist Gina Galati), Bizet's Carmen Suite No. 1, and Richard Strauss' Der Rosenkavalier Waltzes. Admission is free, and be aware that Forsyth Boulevard is closed to traffic; best to enter campus from Forest Park Parkway to Hoyt Drive.
