Photographer Shawn Michelle Smith is intensely interested in other people's photographs, but only marginally. For In the Details, her current show at the Sheldon Art Galleries (3648 Washington Boulevard; 314-533-9900 or www.thesheldon.org), Smith took family snapshots from the 1930s and 40s and examined the stuff at the edge of each picture, such as a stray pair of hands or the furniture pushed out of the way for a group portrait. She photographs these unobtrusive bits and then displays them in grids, giving new meaning to these otherwise forgotten elements. Shawn Michelle Smith: In the Details is open Tuesday through Saturday through Saturday, September 21. Admission is free.
Tuesdays-Saturdays. Starts: June 7. Continues through Sept. 21, 2013
