Fixing Lunch

Change, even of the most fundamental, no-brainer variety, is brought about by people of vision and bottomless energy. People such as New Orleans-born chef Tony Geraci, who made it his mission to "green" the food served to over 80,000 kids in the Baltimore public school system's cafeterias. Anybody who's spent more than half a day in the typical U.S. school cafeteria knows that the grub served to our students is usually sub par; dietary dynamos like Geraci want to fix that situation -- because, yes, it is broke. A much-lauded documentary film called Cafeteria Man charts the Big Easy food man's progress up north in Baltimore. In addition to the charismatic starring role filled out by Chef Tony G., there are guest appearances by Michael Pollan, Michelle Obama, Will Allen and Ann Cooper. Cafeteria Man screens free of charge tonight at 7 p.m. in the Ridgway Visitor Center of the Missouri Botanical Garden (4344 Shaw Boulevard; 314-577-5100 or www.mobot.org).
